Whether your goal is to play hockey, figure skate, or just skate safely and confidently for fun, everyone has to start somewhere!
Learning to ice skate is easier and more fun with the help of a coach! With a little determination, coaching, and practice, you'll glide forward and backward, showing your family and friends what you can do on the ice!
Coach Aimée uses the Learn to Skate USA curriculum and offers beginner private lessons for skaters age 2 and a half and up for at least 30 minutes at Ice Vault in Wayne, NJ or SportsCare Arena (Aspen Ice) in Randolph, NJ.
Skating skills taught are a progressive sequence divided into numerous a test levels. For the best results, lessons should be consistent and are recommended weekly - with at least as much additional practice time on your own.
If you're interested in Beginner Group Lessons, you must register through the rink. While Coach Aimée teaches group lessons, your group lesson instructor will be assigned by the rink. There is no guarantee that Coach Aimée will be your coach for group lessons offered by the rink.
Once you progress to Learn to Skate Basic 4 / ISI Gamma or higher, Coach Aimée offers ASPIRE Group Lessons at Ice Vault in Wayne. ASPIRE group lessons at Ice Vault are led by Coach Aimée.
Private lessons are available at times offered by the rinks. Lessons slots often fill up quickly, and Aimée often has a waiting list in the winter months!
I believe that all skaters must experience some measure of consistent success if an activity is to be enjoyable.
All the lessons have fundamental skills that are the building blocks to more advanced skills. These basic skills include gliding, stopping, turning, jumping, and the ability to skate a distance equal to the width of the ice. Fundamental skills are required before proceeding to other more specialized areas of skating.
I aim to create a healthy and fun environment where skaters progress at their own pace with guidance and enjoy their learning experience.

Even the best skaters in the world fall. It'is a necessary part of learning and does not need to be scary. Coach Aimée will help you learn how to fall safely and get back!
Control and balance are key to successful skating. Coach Aimée will show you how to march, glide, and swizzle with confidence without using the wall!
For many skaters learning how to skate backward is a big goal! Coach Aimée can show you how to march backward, wiggle and even glide backwards!
Once you get moving, you'll need to know how to stop!
Spoiler Alert: Unlike roller skating, the toe pick is not used for stopping ice skating!
Balancing on one foot is critical to successful skating no matter your discipline! Learn how to get started with one-foot glides and move on to edges!
All skate blades have two edges - outside and inside. You have two feet and can skate forward and backward, so there are eight edges that you need to learn. More advanced skills like turning and crossovers require strong edges!
Learning how to turn is a fundamental skill that you will need in hockey or figure skating. It's important to learn the correct turning technique which requires a strong check for control and safety.
Crossovers - both forward and backward -require a lot of patience and practice. Powerful hockey and figure skaters have excellent forward and backward crossovers that assist them in accelerating with speed and control
The beginning curriculum includes all the fun stuff like beginner spins, lunges, bunny hops, toe hops, spirals, and more!
Designed for children ages 2.5 to 3.5 years old (and expandable to include 4- to 5-year-olds), Ice Explorers is an introductory program to Snowplow Sam classes that begins with age-appropriate activities off the ice for the first few weeks before introducing on-ice activities.
These classes are designed to help children aged 6 and younger develop the ABCs of movement: agility, balance, coordination, and speed. The ABCs are essential for developing fundamental movement skills and physical literacy.
Basic Skills teaches the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, and speed skating.
Six progressive levels introduce skaters age 6 and older to forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns. All classes are structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment. Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance only after skill mastery* is demonstrated.
Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1-6 levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.
* Skill mastery means that a skater can perform an element correctly 8 out of 10 times.
The Adult curriculum is designed for both beginning and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills.
Participation in the program will help promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle.
Divided into six levels, from basic skating to more advanced skills, adult skaters will progress individually while being challenged and motivated.
The Aspire Program is designed to provide a bridge from Learn to Skate USA to U.S. Figure Skating.
Each free skate level comprises a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins, and jumps — all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters with a strong foundation of all elements. Instructors will focus on quality and mastery of skills.
The Hockey curriculum is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating. Skaters
will learn how to be more proficient and agile on the ice. Proper skating techniques for the game of hockey are the primary focus of the levels. All elements will be taught without a puck. Skaters will learn the basic hockey stance, stride, knee bend, use of edges and other necessary fundamentals to be successful in hockey practices and game situations.

Most ice rinks, skating schools, and clubs in the United States are affiliated with Learn to Skate USA, U.S. Figure Skating, and/or ISI. What are these organizations, and why should you care?
These levels are specifically designed for beginning skaters aged 6 and under. Test maneuvers are broken down into smaller parts so they can be easily learned and mastered. Fun – along with easy success and accomplishments – are the keys to any Tot level class.
These beginning levels are for skaters of all ages. Step-by-step progression of skills makes learning fun and fast! Once the skater begins to build on the basics, the sky is the limit! It’s important to master these skating “basics” before moving on to higher levels of achievement.
