Finding the right pair of figure skates can present a unique challenge for adult size bodies as must skates are rated for younger skaters. For example, Jackson Ultima rates skates for skaters under 60 lbs, 60-115 lbs, and over 115 lbs. But often adults weigh significantly more than that - myself included!
So adult size skaters may have to go to an increased strength, even if they are just beginning and not jumping in order to get the optimal level of support from a skate.
I always recommend that all skaters visit a reputable skate shop with a trained skate tech. In fact, I recommend that all my skaters go to Greg at Polar Skate Shop. This is even more critical for adult skaters!
However, I do realize that no matter what I say, some of you will prefer to shop online. I feel that this is unfortunate because I truly believe that you will benefit more from the service of an expert without paying more money.
For this reason, I have partnered with the Figure Skating Store. While I'm providing an online option for your convenience, you should always try to visit a local skate shop in person to be fitted appropriately.
Please remember that skates should fit like a "Cinderella slipper" when wearing thin skating socks. Ice skates should never be too big!
I also realize it can be tempting to purchase skates that are less expensive. However, this can do any skater a disservice, especially for adult skaters - because your skates may last you for years because you are no longer growing!
I suggest that adult skaters purchase skates that will provide them with the ability to go several levels so that you have a solid investments in your skates.
Plus, purchasing the right pair of skates now, rather than having to get a new pair for each level, will eliminate the learning curve that you will ultimately have to overcome each time you purchase a new pair of skates.
I have found that most adult skaters do really well the skates that I mention on this page.
I've also found that adults do well with John Wilson blades. Plus, I have tried many of brands of blades and nothing compares to John Wilson - it's the gold standard! So, I have included blade suggestions on this page as well.
And, while I realize purchasing boots and blades separately can be more expensive, this set-up is well worth the price! In fact, you could save yourself money later by not having to "trade-up" or waste money on lessons, ice time, and injuries using less than ideal equipment.
Setting yourself up with the right equipment from the beginning will provide you with less frustration for years to come!
I highly recommend that you check with your coach or skating director to suggest where to go near you before purchasing anything online!

This boot is appropriate for most adult skaters at any level - you cannot overboot in Edea!
I literally wore these for 5 years and used them for coaching, competing, and testing with John Wilson Gold Seal blades - until I switched to Edea Piano for my competing and testing, and Concerto for coaching.
If your budget allows, I highly recommend these boots for adult skaters - they are an excellent investment in your skating well into the future!
This boot is very comfortable and appropriate for beginner adult skaters as well as adult skaters that are up 140 lbs. and learning single jumps.
However, you may find that you need to replace them once a season, or more - depending on how hard you are on your boots and how often you skate.
This boot is appropriate beginner adult skaters as well as adult skaters that are lighter than 120 lbs. and learning single jumps.
However, keep in mind that because they are not as supportive you may have to replace them more often than some of my other suggestions.
This boot is appropriate for adult skaters that are over 115 lbs. and learning single jumps.
This is the popular freestyle blade in the world and is ideal for beginner to advanced skaters.
No other blade on the market can match the legendary performance and value of this fantastic blade.
A skater moving up in skill will appreciate the responsiveness of the 7 ft rocker profile and, due to its coarse cross-cut tooth configuration, this option is highly recommended by international coaches for its reliability when learning new components.
It is precision hardened to offer a strong skating edge and was used by many Olympic, World and National Champions early in their careers.
If this is your first pair of skates or you are leaving a boot/blade combination set and plan on developing your axel and double jumps, this is my go-to option for value.
However, if you can afford Pattern 99 or Gold Seal, you will save yourself the learning curve later on!
OFTEN IMITATED, NEVER EQUALLED
The Pattern 99 blade is no stranger to the podium.
It is one of the most popular profiles in the world as it consistently delivers maximum performance to high-end freestyle skaters.
The primary 8 ft radius works wonderfully for skaters who use the Pattern 99’s tapered top straight cut toe pick for precision toe spotting on explosive jumps.
This blade is ‘the real McCoy’ – it’s not comparable to anything, it’s not similar to anything, it’s the original.
If you’re emerging as an elite level skater with powerful jumps and seek more control by being lower to the ice, this blade is undoubtedly your best option.
Adult skaters can begin on this blade to eliminate the learning curve later on!
This is my blade of choice and what I use every day!
Skaters wearing Gold Seal won more Olympic medals than those wearing any other blade model at PyeongChang 2018.
Perhaps the most widely recommended blade by Russian coaches, this blade delivers for freestyle and pairs skaters seeking an optimal spinning experience.
I chose this blade specifically to help improve my spins and recommend it skaters of any level that struggle with spins and prefer a cross-cut toe pick for better stability.
This can be a difficult blade to adjust to, so skaters switching for another blade need to allow time and patience.
Adult skaters can begin on this blade to eliminate the learning curve later on!
Due to its higher heel stanchion, unique compound radius and tapered/hollow ground features, skaters report experiencing effortless spins and control in their footwork sequences and edge jumps.
