Selecting Your Skating Coach

What To Look For in a Skating Coach!

Finding the right coach for you can be confusing. It can also feel a bit overwhelming

Controversial Topic: Changing Coaches

This is not a decision to be taken lightly, as it can have implications for both the skater and the coach.

Choosing Your Coach:

What Every Skater & Parent Should Know!

Private lessons can be a great, beneficial way to help you progress in figure skating.

A coach’s role is to help athletes improve their performance and reach their full potential by teaching, monitoring, and motivating them.

Good coaches are made, not born. Whether they are at the elite or beginner level, it takes time, education, dedication, and training to become a successful coach.

The best coach is one who is knowledgeable about the sport, listens to the athletes, understands and responds to their needs, gives them a sense of self-worth, and helps them develop and enjoy the sport.

This guide is a resource to help you find the right coach that fits your needs and outlines what makes a good coach.

"Teaching skills and helping skaters reach their potential should never cost that skater’s love for the sport.

Coaches have an obligation to help foster the love of skating that their skaters started with.

Skaters are human and deserve to be given the opportunity to love skating forever."

"I want a coach that understands that what worked for them while they were competing might not work the same way for me and that there are different ways to accomplish success in skating."

"How you measure success is EVERYTHING. What do you look for in a successful coach? Competition results? Or do you look for more?"

Thinking of Changing or Adding Another Coach?

First, Have a Discussion With Your Current Coach!

First, Have a Discussion With Your Current Coach!

First, Have a Discussion With Your Current Coach!

Explain your reasons for wanting to switch or add additional coaches.

If you are moving to another coach, make sure you have paid the current coach in full.

If you are adding an additional coach, ensure the current coach agrees and that the coaches will communicate with each other.

The new coach will contact the previous coach.

Professional coaches will always consult with the previous coach as a courtesy to make sure that they have had a discussion and that they have received all payments due.

Techniques may vary from coach to coach. If the new coach is an addition to the coaching team, it is critical that coaches are in agreement and have open lines of communication.

Treat all coaches with respect.

The right coach for you may differ from what works well for another.

Always keep your comments about any coach complimentary.

Do not make unsolicited comments encouraging another skater to make a change.

Accepted Procedures & Best Practices for Changing Coaches

Requesting a coaching change can often come as a surprise to the current coach as well as others at the rink. There is an expectation that a skater will stay with their primary coach for the duration of the skating journey.

Often a coaching change may be negatively perceived by others and can harm the former coach’s reputation. It’s possible that the new coach may be perceived as “poaching skaters” and can lose their teaching privileges due to unethical behavior.

Therefore, making a coaching change is typically only done when there are scheduling conflicts, there is an issue with the coach that cannot be resolved, the coach retires or moves, or the skater moves to another area or rink.

The decision to change coaches should not be made on a whim or to “change things up.”

Changing coaches is stressful and can be disruptive to the skater as well as both the current and former coach. Sometimes, there is a difference in technique that requires relearning elements.

When there is absolutely no way to resolve a situation and a coaching change is necessary, it's best to make the change before the start of a new season to limit any scheduling issues.

Following these steps will facilitate a comfortable relationship within the rink for all parties:

Coaches are Independent Contractors & Not Employed By The Rinks

Coaches pay for their own memberships, required certifications, liability insurance, health insurance, background checks, annual credentials, and operating expenses.

The rinks charge coaches fees as a "commission" for the use of the facility.

Coaches do not receive any sales commission on any of your purchases at the rink!
